According to the latest Truckometer report, the Light Traffic Index (LTI) fell 0.4% m/m in May, while the Heavy Traffic Index (HTI) fell 2.3% month on month.
Light traffic (motorbikes, cars and vans) is generally a good indicator of the state of demand, as opposed to production. In the absence of sudden shocks, the light traffic data provides a 6-month lead on momentum in the economy – variation in it reflects discretionary spending on outings, movement in courier and tradespeople, etc.

In 2020, a report by the Ministry of Transport found that time of use charging could transform Auckland’s roads by reducing traffic by 8-12%. This could mean our motorways could function as they currently do during the school holidays, all year round.

NZTA confirmation today that it will deliver $2.07 billion for State Highway Pothole Prevention and $1.9 billion for Local Road Pothole Prevention is good news for truck drivers.

Hawke’s Bay leaders say they’ve received heartening information on the Budget 2024 investment and future intentions for local road recovery and are committed to working with central Government to develop deliverable and well-costed plans for ongoing work.
