Government to reverse oil and gas exploration ban

Removing the ban on petroleum exploration beyond onshore Taranaki is part of a suite of proposed amendments to the Crown Minerals Act to deal with the energy security challenges posed by rapidly declining natural gas reserves, Resources Minister Shane Jones says.

Homer Tunnel's New Avalanche Shelter Completed

The Homer Tunnel on the SH94 route to Milford Sound Piopiotahi is ready for winter, with the recent completion of a new avalanche shelter on the Te Anau side of the tunnel, says NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA). 

“NZTA has worked with its Crown infrastructure partners on a $29 million upgrade over the last three years, focused on improving safety and reliability for all Homer Tunnel users and work crews,” says James Caygill, Director Regional Relationships at NZTA.

Rail upgrade north of Whangārei aligned with Marsden Point Rail Link

The project to reopen the rail line north of Whangārei will remain on hold while design work on a new rail link to Marsden Point is carried out so the two projects can be aligned.

KiwiRail Chief Planning and Asset Development Officer David Gordon says the Government- funded project was initially paused as KiwiRail engaged with hapū along the route. State Highway 2 Petone closure extended

Due to recent bad weather, more time is needed to complete improved safety barriers for State Highway 2 Petone

Contractors will be back on site again on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday nights (16, 17 and 20 June), meaning that State Highway 2 will be closed to southbound traffic between 9pm and 4:30am on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday nights. 

As per previous closures, a local road detour will be available via Lower Hutt. It will require extra travel time, and drivers should plan their journeys accordingly.

Trucking firms concerned at reported delay in dropping fuel prices

Road freight peak body Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand is concerned by a Commerce Commission analysis, showing fuel retailers are slow to bring prices down in response to global oil prices and exchange rate changes. The Commission’s analysis found this lopsided approach leaves Kiwis paying more for longer than they should – for up to two weeks, costing around $15 million per year.
