Road Freight Industry Warns Tolling Existing Roads Will Undermine Public Support

Road freight association Transporting New Zealand is urging the Government to remove provisions in the Land Transport (Revenue) Amendment Bill that would allow existing roads to be tolled and enable heavy vehicles to be forced onto toll roads. Submissions on the Bill closed this week.

Road surfacing and wire rope barrier maintenance will be taking place Sunday to Thursday nights on State Highway 1 (SH1) between Dragway Road and Te Kauwhata from mid-January to mid-February, which means lane restrictions or detours for road users.

NZTA has recently suspended the licences of commercial drivers who were either suspected of submitting fraudulent documents when converting their overseas licences or whose licences were converted to the incorrect class.
It is providing a limited window of time for those drivers to re-sit the relevant tests.
If drivers have committed fraudulent activities, then NZTA will follow due process and take the appropriate actions to address that. In my view, this is a good risk-based approach.
