One of the key takeouts for me from last week’s Fuel Pricing & Supply Seminar was fuel market expert Steve West’s observation that “we have a fuel price crisis, not a fuel supply crisis”. He noted there had been no shortage of supply of engine fuels to NZ, but that we had been victims of commodity market speculation which had seen refined fuel prices shoot up, with diesel in particular being double that for petrol, and three times that of crude oil.

Agreement unlocks the next phase of the Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment Project

Port Marlborough has signed an Interim Development Agreement (IDA) with Ferry Holdings Limited, unlocking the next phase of the Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment Project.

The agreement enables transition works to proceed while establishing the commercial, governance and management framework needed to advance the project to the final stage of delivery (subject to Shareholder approval) in June.

The latest update shows national fuel stocks remain stable with sufficient stock levels across petrol, diesel and jet fuel.

Dismissal of Gibson Appeal a Major Win for Workers’ Safety

The Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) has welcomed the High Court’s decision to dismiss the appeal of former Ports of Auckland Chief Executive Tony Gibson, calling the ruling a major victory for workers.

The High Court upheld Gibson’s earlier conviction under the Health and Safety at Work Act, which resulted in a $130,000 fine and an order to pay $60,000 in costs. 

The prosecution followed the death of 31-year-old stevedore Pala’amo Kalati, who was killed by a falling container at the port in August 2020....

Elf FCEV - Isuzu platform, Toyota hydrogen tech

Isuzu and Toyota are already working together to make route buses powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. We saw that with the Erga FCV that was showcased at last year’s Japan Mobility Show.

This time out, the two Japanese companies are leveraging the technology for use in light-duty trucks. Isuzu and Toyota have announced they are collaborating again to develop a hydrogen fuel cell truck based on the Elf EV platform.

Full night closure for gantry installation – SH1 northbound, Mackays Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre

A full night closure of State Highway 1 northbound is planned at Transmission Gully as part of ongoing construction of the Mackays Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC).

On Monday, 20 April (9 pm – 4:30 am), contractors will install a gantry that will provide electronic messaging for heavy vehicle compliance and safety operations once the CVSC is operational.

While this is underway, the northbound lanes through State Highway 1 Transmission Gully will have to be closed to traffic to allow the gantry to be safely...
