Yesterday I joined Chief Executives from across the motor vehicle industry at the Beehive for our regular meeting with the Minister of Transport, where it is safe to say that we had plenty to discuss. Simeon Brown is delivering a full policy and change agenda, focussed on lifting productivity, efficiency and safety across the transport portfolio. These include reforming how we pay for roads, removing red tape in outdated rules that tangle transport, and  supporting low emission heavy vehicles.

Truckometer - Straightening up

According to the latest ‘Truckometer’, the Light Traffic Index (LTI) rose 0.6% m/m in August, while the Heavy Traffic Index (HTI) fell 0.7%. Heavy traffic has fallen by 3.3% y/y, a much larger fall than the 1.1% annual fall seen in light traffic.

First off the block – SH1 road renewal underway

The first block closure of the huge maintenance project for State Highway 1 in central and southern Waikato is now underway, just south of Tīrau. 

This is stage 1 of an accelerated road renewal programme, which is one of the largest and most ambitious maintenance and rehabilitation projects to be undertaken in New Zealand. It will see NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) undertake renewal work over approximately 23 percent of SH1 between Piarere and the Waiouru.

Kaitaki sentencing underscores need for new ferries

The sentencing of KiwiRail for a 2023 incident on the Kaitaki interisland ferry highlights the urgent need for replacement ferries, says the Maritime Union of New Zealand.

KiwiRail was fined $432,500 for a charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act brought by industry regulator Maritime New Zealand, following loss of engine power on the Interislander ferry Kaitaki on Saturday 28 January 2023.
