Strait of Hormuz uncertainty, but NZ fuel supply remains strong

As I write this a fragile two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran is tentatively holding.  One of the terms of that agreement is that Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz, which if held to may see some fuel shipping out of the Persian Gulf, providing shipping companies have confidence their vessels will be able to navigate a safe passage.

The Light Traffic Index (LTI) fell 2.4% in March to be up 3.6% y/y. The Heavy Traffic Index (HTI) rose 0.4% in the month, and is up 2.3% y/y.

Light traffic (motorbikes, cars and vans) is generally a good indicator of the state of demand, as opposed to production. It typically provides up to a six-month lead on momentum in the economy, with variation reflecting discretionary spending on outings, movement of couriers and tradespeople etc. Light traffic had been lifting strongly but reversed course in March.

The Green Party is calling on petrol companies to act quickly following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire that has caused the price of fuel to drop.

"Fuel companies moved quickly to increase their prices at the start of the conflict. With prices falling off the back of the ceasefire, they need to come down just as fast," says Green Party Co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick.

Installation work continues for Mackays Crossing Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre

Drivers travelling on the Kāpiti Coast can expect to see more activity and travel impacts as construction of the Mackays Crossing Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC) continues this month.

Nighttime and daytime works are planned for State Highway 1 and State Highway 59 until the end of April for the project.
