When the goal is creating a special tribute to “the big fella”, starting with the 16-litre V8 muscle and styling of Scania’s mighty new S 770 provides a perfect platform.

Martinborough Transport has a special S 770 at work in its 35-strong fleet. A few extra details, custom paint, unique murals along on the flanks and the rego number 4H0RI provide a tribute to company founder Trevor “Hori” Hawkins.

“It’s a bit of a statement,” says Jared Hawkins, the youngest of Trevor’s three sons who now own the company Trevor started back in 1982.

“This one is our 40-year anniversary truck and a tribute to Mum (Carol) and Dad,” says Jared.

The instantly recognisable green and white paint scheme and signage of Taranaki’s Uhlenberg Haulage receives a subtle - and retro themed - detail change on the fleet’s most recent addition.

A new Kenworth T909 6x4 began its working life in early January, extending a long association with the Kenworth marque for the Eltham-based company which was founded in 1966 by Mike and Carol Uhlenberg.

The company is now operated by their three sons Chris, Daryl and Tony and it will be third generation family member, Blair Uhlenberg (son of Chris), who drives the new T909.

The signature pale blue colours of Normans have made way for a special and striking one-off gold livery to mark the Waikato company’s 50th anniversary this year.

Named “Gold Fever”, the 2022 Scania R 660 8x4 Sleeper and its five-axle Domett curtainside trailer went on the road in March as a golden anniversary celebration for the company founded in 1972 by Charlie and Marie Norman.

Normans started with a 1966 vintage Commer 117hp 2-stroke logger working between Coromandel and the Tauranga port. Over five decades the company has been involved in livestock transport, the dairy industry and general freight.
