Road freight association Transporting New Zealand is calling for Gisborne District Council to urgently repair Tiniroto Road between Gisborne and Wairoa, warning its deteriorating condition is creating serious safety risks and costs for freight operators and other road users.

A long-awaited upgrade to a key State Highway 1 intersection is now underway after government support for the project.
Contractors on behalf of the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) have this week started work on upgrading the site in Timaru between SH1/Evans Street, Grants Road and the Showgrounds Shopping Centre, following the successful completion of other necessary roading work at the intersection.

The Light Traffic Index (LTI) fell 2.4% in March to be up 3.6% y/y. The Heavy Traffic Index (HTI) rose 0.4% in the month, and is up 2.3% y/y.
Light traffic (motorbikes, cars and vans) is generally a good indicator of the state of demand, as opposed to production. It typically provides up to a six-month lead on momentum in the economy, with variation reflecting discretionary spending on outings, movement of couriers and tradespeople etc. Light traffic had been lifting strongly but reversed course in March.
