SH76 Brougham Street construction begins

Work is set to start on major upgrades to State Highway 76 (SH76) Brougham Street in Christchurch that will support economic growth and make it safer and easier for people to move through the city, Transport Minister Chris Bishop says. 

“Earlier this year the Government confirmed Crown funding for this Road of Regional Significance, and being in Christchurch to turn the first sod today is an exciting step forward,” Mr Bishop says.

Top of the South state highway update – response work continuing across the region

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) contractors are hard at work at several state highway sites across the top of the South Island, as the massive clean-up and repair job in the region continues.

The summary below outlines the current status of the region’s state highway network.

Update on work towards potential Marsden Point biorefinery

In October 2024, Channel Infrastructure NZ Limited (Channel or Channel Infrastructure} announced it had entered into a conditional project development agreement with Seadra Energy, in relation to the proposed development of a biorefinery at Marsden Point. 

Seadra Energy is partnering with consortium members Qantas, Renova Inc, Kent Plc, and ANZ. The Seadra consortium has completed its initial Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) study, and has now moved to the next phase of its project development work.  .. Read More

Truckometer - Monthly Falls but up Year on Year

The Light Traffic Index (LTI) fell 1.3% in June and is 0.9% higher than a year ago. The more volatile Heavy Traffic Index (HTI) also fell 1.3% in the month, but is up 3.0% y/y.

Light traffic (motorbikes, cars and vans) is generally a good indicator of the state of demand, as opposed to production. It typically provides a six-month lead on momentum in the economy, with variation reflecting discretionary spending on outings, movement of couriers and tradespeople etc.
