New truck registrations from July are again well behind last year’s figures as truck sales continue to reflect the overall state of the New Zealand economy.

The monthly registrations showed just 367 new truck sales, well behind the July 2024 volume of 446 registrations, equating to a 17.7% year-on-year decrease.

Year-to-date the 2,126 registrations in the first seven months of the year compares to 3,275 in the same period last year.

The YTD tally of 550 trailer registrations is 40.68% down on last year’s 926 units registered by July 2024 and 45.9% down on the record year-to-date total of 1017 new trailers registered in Jan-July 2018.

The monthly registrations showed just 367 new truck sales, well behind the July 2024 volume of 446 registrations, equating to a 17.7% year-on-year decrease.

Isuzu continues to lead the overall truck market (4.5-tonne GVM and above) with 64 registrations in July advancing its total to 397 units.

Hino (329/53) remains in second, ahead of Fuso (312/83) while Scania (223/32) continues in fourth position. Kenworth (140/20) snuck one registration ahead of Volvo (139/19) during July while Iveco (124/17) retains seventh ahead of DAF (77/13), Foton (71/16) and Mercedes-Benz (69/5) claiming tenth position.

Isuzu holds a market share of 18.7% YTD (down from 20.8% at the same point last year) while Hino has improved its market share from 10.4% to 15.5% in the same period. Fuso was the top-selling brand in July and holds 14.7% market share YTD.

In the 3.5-4.5t crossover segment Fiat (168/26) leads the July market to regain the top spot ahead of LDV (156/13), Mercedes-Benz (89/18), Ford (54/11) and Volkswagen (38/0).

Isuzu’s market leadership is built on the light and medium segments. In the 4.5-7.5t class Isuzu (140/17) continues to lead YTD, ahead of Fuso (112/30) and Iveco (70/7). Next are Hino (61/14), Foton (47/13) and Mercedes-Benz (40/2).

In the 7.5-15t division, Isuzu (172/36) is extending its lead ahead of Hino (115/17) and Fuso (99/29). Foton (24/3), Hyundai (18/1), Iveco (16/2) all retain their places while MAN (10/10) joins the market with 10 registrations in July.

In the 15-20.5t segment, Hino (39/4) continues to lead over Fuso (15/5), UD (10/3) and Iveco (6/4).

There were no surprises in the small 20.5-23t segment with Hino (11/3) retaining the top spot with three registrations. Scania (6/2) was the only other manufacturer to register units in July.

In the premium 23t-maximum GVM division, Scania (211/30) stands firm in the number one position ahead of Kenworth (140/20), Volvo (134/18) and Hino (103/15).

Fuso (85/19) moves ahead of Isuzu (79/10) while DAF (77/13), UD (57/8), Iveco (31/4) and Mercedes-Benz (24/2) all hold their positions to round out the top-10.

In the trailer market, the clear leader again for the month of July was Fruehauf (83/10). It’s a closer battle for second ranking between Transport Trailers (48/5) and Patchell (43/7). Next are Roadmaster (39/7), Domett (31/3), TMC (27/5), M.T.E (25/5) and Transfleet (21/4) to round out the top-10 manufacturers.
