August saw 356 trucks (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) registered, lifting the January-August YTD total to 2482 registrations, according to official NZ Transport Agency data.
It’s a decrease from 487 units recorded in August 2024 while the YTD registration total is a 34.14% decrease on the total of 3769 units registered in the same period last year.
With 71 new registrations in August the trailer market YTD number now stands at 621 units, down from 1040 last year and well short of the YTD record of 1183 units which was set in 2018.

In the overall 4.5t to maximum GVM truck market, Isuzu with 61 August registrations (458 YTD) still leads New Zealand market with a YTD market share of 18.5%. Last year Isuzu achieved 76 registrations in August and its YTD tally was 756 units.
Hino (367/38) holds second place and has grown its market share year-on-year by maintaining its registration numbers in the tough market. Hino is only 11 units behind its 2024 YTD total, climbing from fourth to second in the YTD rankings and has grown its market share from 10.3% to 14.8%.
Fuso (362/50) holds third position and its market share is down from 17.3% last year to 14.6% this year.
There were few surprises in the crossover 3.5-4.5t GVM segment, with Fiat (190/22) continuing to lead with 26.5% of the market share. Mercedes-Benz (175/86) moves into second place with an impressive 86 registrations for the month while LDV (172/16) holds third ahead of Ford (61/7) well behind in fourth.
In the 4.5-7.5t GVM class, Isuzu (165/25) continues to be dominant with a 23.1% market share. Fuso (137/25) is in second position with a 19.2% share. Third position is held by Iveco (101/31) ahead of Mercedes-Benz (80/40).
In the 7.5-15t GVM category Isuzu (197/25) continues to build a clear lead ahead of Hino (126/11) and third placed Fuso (114/15).
In the 15-20.5t GVM division, Hino (43/4) retains the lead, well ahead of Fuso (17/2) and UD (11/1).
In the tiny 20.5-23t segment Hino retains the top spot with one registration for the month and 12 YTD, taking its YTD share to 50.0% ahead of Scania (8/2) now taking 33.3% of the market. There were only three registrations for the month.
In the premium 23t to maximum GVM division, Scania (239/28) continues to lead and enjoys a 21.9% market share YTD. Kenworth (154/14) retains second ahead of Volvo (146/12). Hino (115/12) continues in fourth place ahead of Fuso (93/8), DAF (92/15), Isuzu (89/10), UD (66/9), Iveco (39/8) and Mercedes-Benz (30/6) to round out the top 10.
In the trailer market, Fruehauf (97/14) continues to build a break over the rest – ahead of Transport Trailers (53/3). Patchell (51/8) retains third with Roadmaster (40/1) in fourth. TMC (34/7) moves ahead of Domett (33/2) into sixth and MTE (28/3) also moves ahead of TES (27/2). Transfleet (24/3) and Lowes (19/1) retain their positions rounding out the top 10.
