There were 341 registrations of new trucks with a GVM above 4.5 tonnes during September and the year-to-date (YTD) total has reached 2824 registrations for the first nine months of 2025.

The September total is well down from last year’s 425 registrations and slightly down on the August 2025 total of 356 registrations. The YTD total represents a 32.6% decrease on the same period last year (4194 registrations) as the new truck market continues to reflect general trends in the New Zealand economy.

The trailer market in September achieved 86 registrations, slightly ahead of the 83 recorded in the same month last year. However, the YTD total of 696 registrations is 38% behind the 1123 figure for the same period last year.

In the overall heavy truck market (above 4.5t GVM), Isuzu was the September market leader with 71 new registrations to increase its YTD total to 529 units and extend its lead over Hino (415/48).

Fuso (406/44) retains third place, comfortably ahead of Scania (274/21) and Iveco (196/32) to complete the top five rankings. Kenworth (167/13), Volvo (163/12), Mercedes-Benz (127/12), DAF (113/21) and Foton (92/11) all retain their positions from last month to round out the top-10 in the 4.5t to max category.

In the 3.5-4.5t GVM crossover segment, Fiat (229/39) still leads the category ahead of September top-seller Mercedes-Benz (223/48) while LDV (204/32) is third. The top three brands account for a 75% share of this market segment.

In the 4.5-7.5t GVM division, the top four rankings are unchanged with Isuzu (186/21) leading Fuso (165/28), Iveco (124/23) and Mercedes-Benz (84/4). 

The 7.5-15t GVM segment sees Isuzu (238/41) holding a clear lead over Hino (147/21). Isuzu holds a 38.6% share of this category, while Fuso (120/6) remains in third.

Hino (45/2) continues to lead in the 15-20.5t GVM division with Fuso (19/2) and UD (13/2) in third. Mercedes-Benz and Volvo top the September numbers with three registrations each in this category.

The tiny 20.5-23t segment recorded just one registration for the month of September for Hino (13/1). Hino now holds a 52% share of the category YTD and Scania (8/0) follows in second.

The premium 23t to maximum GVM division sees Scania (259/20) continuing to build its leadership through the first nine months of the year. Scania’s 20 registrations ranks it number one YTD with a total of 259 units, representing a 20.8% share of the market.

Kenworth (167/13) retains second ahead of Volvo (155/9) in third and Hino (123/8) in fourth.

DAF (113/21) was the premium segment top-seller for the month of September with 21 registrations, a result that moves the brand ahead of Fuso (101/8) into fifth position. Isuzu (97/8), UD (82/16), Iveco (46/7) and Mercedes-Benz (35/5) retain their positions – rounding out the top-10 brands.

Trailer market leader Fruehauf led the September market with 17 new registrations, growing its YTD total to 114 units. Patchell (65/14) moves into second position ahead of Transport Trailers (58/5) in third.

Roadmaster (41/1) remains in fourth, while Domett (39/6) moved ahead of TMC (36/2), while MTE (32/4) and TES (32/5) are tied in seventh ahead of Transfleet (28/4), Fairfax (24/7) and Lowes (21/2) to complete the top-10.
