New Zealand’s new truck and trailer market continues to settle near 2025 levels, with a slight uplift recorded in the March 2026 registration figures provided by NZTA.

New truck registrations (4.5t and above) totalled 341 units in March, an increase of 11.07% on 307 sales in March 2025.

Year-to-date (YTD) the truck market now totals 894 units in the first quarter of the year, down slightly (-2.5%) on the 917 units registered in the same period last year.

The trailer market is tracking much of the same – the YTD total is 228 registrations which is an 11.96% decrease on last year’s 259 units. However, the monthly total of 88 new trailers for March is down just two registrations (2.22%) from the March 2025 total of 90.

Isuzu had a good month with a market-leading 67 registrations and holds the number one spot in the overall truck market with 156 sales YTD. Interestingly at the same time last year Isuzu had sold 156 units.

With 56 registrations in March, Hino moves into second position with 128 registrations in Q1, a figure very close to last year when Hino achieved 133 registrations.

Behind Isuzu and Hino in the 4.5t-maximum GVM truck market, the data now shows Fuso (108/29) holding third ahead of Scania (98/50), Mercedes-Benz (73/22), Iveco (66/16), Volvo (48/20), Kenworth (45/14) and UD (40/13).

In the 3.5-4.5t crossover segment (not included in our truck registration numbers), Fiat (83/21) retains the top spot ahead of Mercedes-Benz (42/15) and LDV (28/6) followed by Ford (15/4), Volkswagen (14/8), and Ram (3/0).

This segment has grown significantly this year from 131 units in the Jan-March period last year to 185 in the first three months of 2026.

In the 4.5-7.5t segment Isuzu (52/24) is the leader ahead of Mercedes-Benz (45/9) and Iveco (45/10) tied in second. Hino (41/18), Fuso (33/9), Foton (20/11) and Hyundai (10/5) are next.

The 7.5-15t segment sees Isuzu (59/28) ahead of Fuso (39/14), Hino (36/14), Hyundai (9/4) and Foton (5/3).

In the small 15-20.5t category Hino (18/9) is the clear leader ahead of UD (7/3), Isuzu (6/3) and Fuso (5/1).

The 20.5-23t segment shows just one registration in the month of March for Isuzu. 

Scania is the clear leader in the  premium 23t-maximum GVM category with 49 units registered for the month of March and the top spot YTD with 93 registrations.

Kenworth (45/14) retains second and Volvo (47/20) is third. Isuzu (37/11) leads the Japanese brands ahead of UD (32/9) in a tie with Hino (32/14) and also DAF (32/14). Fuso (31/5) is next ahead of Mercedes-Benz (27/13) and Iveco (16/4) to round out the top-10 in the 23t-max GVM category.

Patchell continues to make a strong start to 2026 and holds the lead in the trailer market with 11 registrations in March and 33 YTD. The Rotorua-based manufacturer is tracking well ahead of the 24 registrations it achieved in the same quarter last year.

Fruehauf had a good month with 11 registrations to tie with Patchell in March and now has 30 new registrations YTD to rank second in the market.

Roadmaster (19/10) consolidates third ranking ahead of Domett (15/8), Fairfax (14/8), Transport Trailers (12/4), TES (12/7), TMC (11/6), MTE (10/3), and Transfleet (6/3) to round out the top-10.
