New truck registrations (trucks with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) totalled 295 units in May – up from 279 in the same month last year and also ahead of the previous month (April 2026) total of 252.
YTD the NZ Transport Agency data shows total registrations of 1452 units for the first five months of the year. The market is fractionally behind the total for the same January-May period last year of 1466 registrations.
The trailer market is also much of the same – with 77 registrations in May – slightly ahead of last year’s 71 for the month of May and one unit ahead of April 2026.

The YTD total at the end of May stands at 381 new trailers compared to 391 for the same period last year, however a long way behind the record of 702 which was achieved in 2018.
In the overall 4.5t to maximum GVM new truck market, Isuzu retains the lead for May with 56 registrations – taking its 2026 total to 262 registrations, just ahead of last year’s 257 YTD total registrations.
Hino (YTD 205/May 39) retains second, down slightly compared to 223 registrations in the same period last year. Meanwhile third-placed Fuso (160/25) has dropped year-on-year from 200 registrations YTD in 2025.
Scania (YTD 147/18) remains in fourth position ahead of Iveco (107/33) in fifth. Iveco moves ahead of Volvo (104/29) and Mercedes-Benz (92/13) which now rank sixth and seventh. Kenworth (61/9), UD (53/7) and DAF (52/13) all retain their positions to round out the top-10.
Fiat (122/16) retains its number one spot in the crossover 3.5-4.5t GVM segment, with Mercedes-Benz (64/12) well behind in second followed by LDV (41/9) in third.
In the 4.5-7.5t GVM category, Isuzu (88/19) continues to lead while Iveco (67/18) moves ahead of Hino (59/8) to take third place.
In the 7.5-15t GVM category, Isuzu (99/23) is gradually building its lead over Hino (62/22) and Fuso (56/11). Foton (12/4) and Hyundai (12/2) are tied in fourth.
Hino (24/6) retains the number one spot in the 15-20.5t GVM division. Isuzu (12/2) holds second, ahead of UD (9/1) and Fuso (9/2) tied in third ahead of Iveco (6/2) in fifth.
In the tiny 20.5-23t segment, Hino (4/2) continues to hold the top spot. Scania (2/1) picked up the only other registration for the month and is tied with Isuzu (2/0) in second.
Registrations in the premium 23t to maximum GVM segment show a continuation of Scania’s leadership with 17 registrations in May boosting its YTD total to 141 units and holding a YTD market share of 19.8%.
Volvo (103/29) was the best-selling brand in May, jumping ahead of Kenworth (61/9) into second, while Isuzu (61/12) is now tied in third with Kenworth.
Hino (56/11) retains fifth place however DAF (52/13) and UD (48/6) move ahead of Fuso (44/6). Mercedes-Benz (42/10) and Iveco (31/12) also traded places to round out the top-10.
In the trailer market, Fruehauf (55/16) becomes the new leader with 16 registrations for the month of May, while Patchells (52/7) remain close behind in second place.
Roadmaster (33/7) follow in third place ahead of Domett (23/1), TES (21/2), Transport Trailers (20/7), Fairfax (18/2), TMC (17/4), M.T.E (15/3) and Transfleet (10/3) in tenth to round out the top-10.
