The Mount Victoria Tunnel is about to have its annual Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF) inspection.
Posted: 05-Mar-2026 |
It will be subject to a week of night closures from Monday 16 March to Thursday 19 March, between 9pm and 5am.
As with work undertaken for the Terrace Tunnel in February, contractors will make the most of the closure to complete road resurfacing work around the Basin Reserve.
Informally described as one of the country’s largest roundabouts, SH1 around the Basin Reserve carries around 20,000 vehicles daily. So, it is important the road surface be maintained regularly.
Contractors will be improving the skid resistance of the highway’s surface around the Rugby Street intersection. This will make the road safer for traffic.
This work is scheduled to be done on Monday and Tuesday nights (16 and 17 March), weather permitting. Contractors will make every effort to minimise noise impacts on nearby residents.
However, some disruption will occur. There will be local road intersection closures, lane closures, and stop/go traffic management in place while this work is underway.
Travel delays and detours can be expected, and drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.
Works schedule and detour map:
Monday 16 March to Thursday 19 March. 9pm - 5am
Traffic must detour via Constable Street, Riddiford Street and Adelaide Road
Lane closures at the Basin Reserve
Stop/go traffic controls at the SH1/Belfast Street and SH1/Rugby Street intersections
