State Highway 2 Hutt Valley works planned

The state highway summer maintenance programme is stepping up in the Hutt Valley, with resurfacing planned at multiple locations along State Highway 2 over the coming weeks.

Roxanne Hilliard, Wellington Alliance Manager, says around 13.8 lane kilometres* of State Highway 2 will be resurfaced from Ngauranga to Maoribank.

“We will have road crews working at multiple locations. These include Ngauranga to Petone, near Kennedy Good Bridge, and at Maoribank in Upper Hutt.”

“We will be starting with lane closures from Monday 26 October between Ngauranga and Petone. Following this, road users can expect road closures coming up in early November and we will confirm closure schedules in future updates,” Ms Hilliard says.

Ms Hilliard says contractors do work on the same highway corridors every year, at slightly different locations.

“We plan and prioritise maintenance across the corridor so we can renew sections when they need it, while managing the disruption for people using the highway.”

“Resurfacing has to be staged and prioritised, and high-traffic areas do require more frequent maintenance.”

“For example, the north and southbound lanes between Ngauranga and Petone carry over 34,000 vehicles every day. With that level of traffic, the road surface takes a lot of wear. Regular resurfacing is an important part of keeping the highway safe, reliable and in good condition.” Ms Hilliard says.

Ms Hilliard says the work is essential and must be done. “Like servicing your car, regular maintenance keeps our highways in good condition and helps avoid bigger, more disruptive repairs later.”

Planned work and timing: Ms Hilliard says the work will be staged and carried out at night over approximately five weeks.

“It will not be happening all at once on the State Highway 2 corridor. We space it out over time and complete sections individually to keep travel delays on the highway corridor as short as we can.”

“We are also doing the work at night when traffic volumes are lower, avoiding daytime peak traffic periods,” Ms Hilliard says.
