Scania’s slam dunk for recruitment

Scania Australia has hit the ground running in 2025 with an innovative new approach to attract young talent into the trucking industry—a basketball-themed promotional vehicle dubbed the "Scania Dunk Truck." Designed to appeal to Australia’s growing base of basketball enthusiasts, this custom P 360 6x2 truck has been outfitted with a retractable basketball hoop and partnered with a portable 10x10 metre court supplied by Dream Courts, offering a unique on-the-go basketball experience.

The Dunk Truck initiative stems from Scania’s marketing and pre-sales teams, aiming to spark interest in the brand among young Australians while addressing ongoing recruitment challenges. With the company growing its footprint in the heavy vehicle market—breaking sales records in 2024 and supplying an increasing number of new trucks and services, Scania says it needs more technicians and support staff to meet rising demand. Marketing Director Zsuzsa Zalatnai hopes the Dunk Truck will help inspire a new wave of recruits.

“We recognise the intense interest in basketball and are hoping the Dunk Truck’s presence at key events will expose our brand to young and ambitious Australians who might want to work for us,” Zalatnai said.

Engineering for the Dunk Truck was led by pre-sales engineer Dean van Lunenburg, who worked on creating a stable, retractable hoop platform capable of withstanding the pressures of gameplay while staying transport-ready. The vehicle features a curtainsider body built by Austruck Truck Bodies, with custom-themed curtains printed and installed by Royans Australia.

“We’re very excited by how the design turned out, it’s practical and a lot of fun,” van Lunenburg commented. A recent test run at Scania’s Victorian headquarters even had staff leaving their desks to shoot some hoops. “Basketball reaches so many people; it’s the perfect way to connect,” he said.

Adding a touch of flair to the campaign, Scania enlisted the talents of Guy Dupuy, aka @therealfrequentflyer, who performed jaw-dropping dunks in promotional videos for the campaign's social media launch. The Dunk Truck made its first public appearance in December 2024 at St Kilda foreshore, where it was enthusiastically received by beachgoers .

Next on the Dunk Truck’s tour are the Bathurst 12-Hour endurance race and the Brisbane Truck Show, with additional stops to be announced on Scania’s website and social media channels. With its bold mix of basketball culture and innovative engineering, the Dunk Truck aims to slam-dunk its message into the hearts of young Australians while driving future recruitment for this $500 million industry giant.
