Scania Australia has entered into a partnership with the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) to enhance road safety awareness, particularly concerning interactions between traffic and heavy vehicles. As part of this collaboration, Scania will sponsor a new annual road safety award focusing on heavy commercial vehicles .
Manfred Streit, Managing Director of Scania Australia, emphasized the company's commitment to safety, highlighting that safety is a primary consideration in their operations, from vehicle design to workshop practices . The partnership with ARSF aims to improve understanding among all road users regarding safe interactions with trucks and buses and to promote greater caution among heavy vehicle drivers concerning vulnerable road users . Scania has been a leader in heavy vehicle safety systems in Australia and has made side curtain anti-roll-over airbags standard on every truck since 2018 . Their vehicles also feature advanced safety systems, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Advanced Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Warning.
Scania's latest trucks and buses utilize dual radars to power Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), designed to alert drivers to potential hazards . A key objective of the partnership is to educate the broader community, especially passenger car drivers, on how to interact safely with trucks and buses . Streit noted that trucks and buses require more space and time to stop, and the space maintained by heavy vehicle drivers should not be perceived as an invitation for other drivers to cut in .
Russell White, Founder and Chair of ARSF, stated that Scania's support will contribute to building a stronger road safety culture, ensuring responsible road sharing among all vehicle operators . He stressed the importance of increasing awareness of safe interactions with trucks and buses to improve overall road safety . White also highlighted that the partnership will amplify road safety messaging and drive safety-first initiatives within the heavy vehicle industry, fostering innovation and leadership.
