Port of Auckland Welcomes NZ’s First Electric Empty Container Handler
Posted: 08-May-2025 |
Continuing our commitment to a sustainable future, Port of Auckland is proud to announce the arrival of a pioneering addition to our heavy machinery fleet: New Zealand’s very first fully electric Empty Container Handler!
This impressive piece of equipment marks a significant milestone as Aotearoa’s ports embrace innovative, low-emission solutions. Fully electric, and powered by state-of-the-art charging technology, the new container handler is ready to streamline our operations while minimising environmental impact.
The introduction of the electric empty container handler was made possible thanks to co-funding from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) through its Low Emission Transport Fund (LETF). This programme is dedicated to supporting visionary projects that reduce emissions from heavy transport and machinery — particularly those exceeding 3.5 tonnes across New Zealand.
By leveraging this support, Port of Auckland continues to lead the way in deploying cutting-edge, zero-emission technologies on the waterfront.
The electric container handler represents a critical step in our broader sustainability journey. As a key part of our ongoing efforts, we are actively working towards: Net zero emissions by 2050: Reducing our carbon footprint with innovative technology and operational changes.
Zero waste to landfill by 2040: Embracing a circular economy mindset in all our practices.
A healthier harbour for all: Protecting the land and waters that Aucklanders cherish.
By integrating electric machinery into our operations, we significantly reduce harmful diesel emissions and noise pollution, promoting a healthier environment for our port team, the community, and the harbour’s precious ecology.
