Port of Auckland VBS charges going up again
Posted: 30-May-2025 |
A good chunk of my week has been taken up with the Port of Auckland’s intended access fee increases in 2026 including attending the Port’s stakeholder meetings laying out their plans.
In short, the Port has decided its previously announced 35% increase for 2026 charges was insufficient and that the increase will now be 77%.
Advocating with the port prior to the announcements saw NRC secure some concessions. The $100 increase will be broken into two tranches, $50 on 1 January 2026 and $50 on 1 July 2026. The port was considering changing the timing for peak versus off peak which was abandoned. However, the 77% increase holds.
I pointed out the problems at the stakeholder meeting – namely that our members are being asked to be revenue collectors for the Port and its owner Auckland Council. Exporters, importers, manufacturers and ultimately consumers stand to wear the estimated $25 million per year cost increase during a cost-of-living crisis without seeing any improvement in port productivity or services for customers in return.
We made these points in a news release that was picked up by NewstalkZB, Radio New Zealand, the Herald and Newsroom. Check out the RNZ interviews with me and Ports of Auckland CEO Roger Gray to hear both sides of the story.
The difference between peak and off-peak fees is intended to encourage off-peak (6pm-5am) pick-ups and deliveries to help get heavy transport off the roads – except the places you deliver to typically aren’t open then so that doesn’t work yet.
We’re keen to hear member feedback on what this means for you, especially if you pick up or deliver from Port of Auckland or any other port.
Enjoy your King’s Birthday weekend and stay safe.
