NZ Launches Global Search for New Interislander Ferries and Innovative Alternatives
Posted: 06-Feb-2025 |

The New Zealand Government has launched a comprehensive plan to replace its aging Interislander ferry fleet by 2029, combining direct procurement with an open call for innovative proposals to improve maritime transport infrastructure. Rail Minister Winston Peters announced that the global search for shipyards capable of delivering two new medium-sized ferries has already begun. This initiative focuses on streamlining the procurement process, ensuring specifications will be issued later this year to a narrowed list of suitable shipbuilders.

In addition to directly pursuing new ships, the Government is welcoming alternative procurement proposals from eligible transport operators and investors. The goal is to explore creative solutions that could offer better value and improve overall ferry services beyond the traditional government-led approach. These alternative ideas must meet stringent criteria, including:

Delivering new ships by 2029 with enough freight and passenger capacity while adhering to defined standards. Ensuring necessary landside infrastructure supports ferry operations.

Demonstrating expertise in operations, financing, and maritime investment. Managing risks involved in the transition from old to new systems. Providing superior value for money and annual economic returns over the vessels' lifespan.

The deadline for submissions via the Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS) website (www.gets.govt.nz) is 28 February 2025. This is part of New Zealand's long-term effort to modernize maritime transportation, emphasizing efficiency, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
