NRC Inform of Important changes for 50MAX operators
Posted: 30-Jul-2026 |
As you may be aware from 6 August 2026, NZTA is removing the permit requirement for 50MAX vehicles, including overlength permits, and replacing them with revised proforma designs that must be carried with the vehicle.
There's a three month transition period running to 6 November 2026, and a few flow on changes to road user charges that operators on certain RUC vehicle types should be aware of.
Removal of 50MAX permit requirements: The requirement to carry the revised proforma designs will be in effect from 6 August 2026. The revised proforma designs are now available on our website.
50MAX proforma designs | NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi: We’re putting in place a 3-month transition period to give you time to meet new requirements, from 6 August to 6 November 2026. You'll need to carry revised proforma designs when your current permit expires or by 6 November, whichever is sooner.
For permits that expired after 6 July, we've issued an extension notice changing expiry date to 6 August 2026. You don't need to renew your existing permit, but you must carry a copy of it and a copy of the notice.
50MAX permit expiry extension notice: If you need a new permit before 6 August, you must follow the current application process.
