Merv Solly, a 77-year-old veteran of New Zealand's road freight industry, has been honoured in the 2025 New Year Honours List as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for his outstanding contributions to the transport sector and business.

As the managing director of Sollys Freight, Solly expressed his pride in receiving this recognition, which acknowledges more than six decades of dedicated work in transport, civil construction, quarrying, and farming. Solly became the third-generation leader of the family business at 31, taking over from his father and grandfather. Under his leadership, Sollys Freight evolved from a small rural transport company into a nationwide enterprise with 130 trucks and 180 staff, while diversifying into marine shipping, farming, and coal distribution.

The company now provides an array of services, including freight transport, road maintenance, coastal protection, and the supply of raw materials to support New Zealand’s agriculture and infrastructure industries. Solly expanded operations further by acquiring Golden Bay Dolomite, where he developed biological fertilisers promoting soil health and agricultural productivity. A strong advocate for sustainable farming, he champions natural nitrogen fixers over chemical fertilisers.

Beyond his business ventures, Solly has contributed significantly to his community in Golden Bay, serving as a Lions Club member, supporting the local fire brigade, and mentoring youth. He was previously honoured with a Tasman Community Award and inducted into the New Zealand Road Transport Hall of Fame in 2016.

Despite his busy schedule, Solly remains active in his businesses, enjoys working on his farms during weekends, and takes occasional fishing trips. His broad impact in transport, agriculture, and community service solidifies his position as a deserving recipient of this prestigious honour.
