Mainstream Acquires PBT, Forging a New Powerhouse in New Zealand's Logistics Sector
Posted: 07-Aug-2025 |

In a significant strategic move set to reshape New Zealand's logistics landscape, Mainstream New Zealand has officially announced its acquisition of the transport, containers, and logistics operations of PBT. This merger brings together two of the nation's most respected, homegrown freight operators, combining over 50 years of market presence and expertise to strengthen the national supply chain.

The acquisition is being hailed as a logical step, uniting two companies with strikingly similar histories and corporate cultures. Both Mainstream and PBT evolved from modest, family-run beginnings into expansive nationwide networks, building their reputations on a foundation of operational excellence, relentless customer focus, and a deep-seated passion for the freight industry. Mainstream's leadership expressed immense respect for PBT, noting that when considering an expansion of their express freight market share, acquiring the highly-regarded PBT was the most logical choice. This shared DNA and mutual respect are expected to foster a smooth integration process, returning the PBT operations to a family-led business culture where long-term commitment and shared values are paramount.

This move is a bold strategic maneuver for Mainstream, significantly enhancing its market position and service offerings. By integrating PBT, Mainstream expands its capabilities across key logistics areas, including express freight, container transport, warehousing, and global forwarding. The acquisition solidifies Mainstream's standing as one of New Zealand’s largest and most rapidly growing logistics providers, poised to set new benchmarks in service and performance. Such mergers often lead to greater operational efficiencies, expanded service networks, and increased capacity, ultimately benefiting customers through more comprehensive and competitive solutions.

Both companies are prioritising stability and a smooth integration for all stakeholders. A key focus is on ensuring continuity for the staff, contractors, and customers of PBT, who are being welcomed into the Mainstream family. Leadership from Mainstream has assured that customers can expect consistency in service, relationships, and support, with no immediate changes to their existing account contacts or services.

The formal integration process is already underway and is projected to be fully completed by September 1, 2025. For existing Mainstream customers, all services will continue as normal. With aligned values, strong leadership, and a shared operational philosophy, the newly combined entity is well-positioned to deliver enhanced freight solutions across town, the country, and the globe.
