Fairfax Launches New All-Electric, Fully Autonomous Refrigerated Trailer System
Posted: 29-Aug-2024 |

Fairfax has made a significant leap in the logistics industry with the introduction of New Zealand's first fully autonomous, all-electric, engineless refrigerated trailer system. This innovative solution promises to revolutionise the transportation of goods across the country while dramatically reducing environmental impact.

The new trailer, named Fairfax ZE (Zero Emissions), represents a vision of future logistics where trucks can deliver fresh produce without generating harmful emissions. Developed in collaboration with leading technology providers Transcold, Carrier, and SAF-Holland, the Fairfax ZE combines state-of-the-art technology to create an environmentally friendly and highly efficient solution for the transport sector.

Chris Devoy, CEO of Action, expressed excitement about this groundbreaking innovation. “We are incredibly excited to introduce this revolutionary technology to New Zealand,” he said. “This is a major step forward in our journey towards a zero-emissions future and demonstrates our dedication to sustainable logistics.”

At the core of the Fairfax ZE trailer is the all-electric eCool refrigeration system by Carrier, which is powered by a state-of-the-art SAF-Holland electric axle. This innovative design, supplied by Transcold, eliminates the need for a traditional diesel engine, resulting in zero tailpipe emissions and significantly reduced energy consumption during standby mode.

The concept for this pioneering technology originated from Action Group engineer Edd Collins, who was inspired by the potential of integrating an electric generation axle with an electric refrigeration unit. "I was captivated by the idea, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see our vision become a reality," Collins stated. "I believe this project will set a new standard for efficient and sustainable heavy transport."

Brad Jackson, Transpecs Product Sales Manager for SAF-Holland, praised the collaboration on the project. “Partnering with Fairfax on this project has been a truly inspiring experience,” he said. “Our advanced axle technology, combined with Fairfax’s expertise, has created a solution that sets a new standard for sustainable transport.”

Looking ahead, Fairfax envisions integrating the ZE trailer into a completely zero-emission truck, further minimising emissions and expanding sustainable transport solutions. While focusing on the Signature ZE trailer innovation, the company remains committed to the development of a comprehensive zero-emission transportation system, paving the way for a greener future in logistics.
