End of an Era - Interislander's Aratere Ferry Completes Final Voyage
Posted: 21-Aug-2025 |
After 26 years of dedicated service, the Interislander ferry Aratere made its final crossing of the Cook Strait on Monday, marking the end of a significant chapter in New Zealand's maritime history. The vessel, which has completed 53,000 crossings and transported over five million passengers, was given a heartfelt send-off as it journeyed from Picton to Wellington for the last time.
As the Aratere arrived in Wellington harbor just after 2 p.m., it was greeted by tugboats spraying water into the air as a sign of respect. Onboard, the atmosphere was a mix of celebration and nostalgia. Passengers were treated to complimentary chocolate cupcakes and invited to share memories on a special wall adorned with blue and yellow balloons and a sign that read, "we will miss you".
The retirement of the Aratere is to clear the way for new port infrastructure needed for two larger ships scheduled to arrive in 2029. However, the departure leaves a void for many who have fond memories of the vessel.
For some, the final trip was a poignant bookend to their travels. Passenger Jon Love, who was on one of the Aratere's first sailings in 1999, made a point to be on its last. "I've always had a big interest in ferries... our rail ferries here in New Zealand, since I was a young boy," Love said. "Being able to say I have been on the first and now the last, again it's a bit of a mixed bag for me." He added that the ferry's absence will be felt operationally, predicting it will "hit hard".
Other enthusiasts, like Lachie Deans, made a special trip just to be part of the historic final journey. "I have liked her since I was really young, and it is really sad to see her go after 26 years in service," Deans shared.
The Aratere is set to remain in Wellington port while its owner, KiwiRail, determines its future.
