Daimler and Volvo Launch Coretura to Forge the Digital Future of Commercial Vehicles
Posted: 26-Jun-2025 |

In a landmark move set to reshape the commercial vehicle landscape, industry leaders Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have officially launched Coretura AB, a joint venture headquartered in Gothenburg. Commencing operations in early June 2025, Coretura's mission is to develop a common software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform, aiming to establish a new industry standard and accelerate the digital transformation of trucks and buses.

The venture is a strategic pivot towards software as the central nervous system of future commercial vehicles. Coretura will focus on creating a standardized, open software platform and a dedicated operating system, described as the "non-differentiating core". This approach will decouple software from hardware development cycles, a crucial evolution that allows manufacturers to deploy new digital applications and safety updates wirelessly "over the air". This capability, similar to modern smartphones, is expected to dramatically enhance vehicle efficiency, safety, and the overall customer experience. Coretura's activities will also include specifying and procuring the powerful centralized control units needed to handle the massive amounts of data involved.

"With Coretura, we are setting a clear strategic focus on software development for commercial vehicles," said Karin Rådström, President and CEO of Daimler Truck, calling it "a big and really exciting step... for the entire industry and our customers".

Echoing this sentiment, Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of the Volvo Group, added, "Coretura represents a natural step forward... By leveraging cutting-edge technology and collaborative innovation, we're setting the stage for a new era of connectivity and efficiency in the industry".

The new company, which began with around 50 employees, will be led by CEO Johan Lundén, who joins from a senior role at Volvo Group. Following the signing of binding agreements in October 2024 and receiving all necessary regulatory approvals, the venture is now fully operational, with the first Coretura-powered products expected in vehicles by the end of the decade.

Despite this deep collaboration on foundational technology, both Daimler Truck and Volvo Group will remain fierce competitors, continuing to differentiate their own product ranges and digital service offerings. Coretura positions itself as an open entity, inviting other customers and partners to join its collaborative effort to shape the industry's future. As CEO Johan Lundén states, "This joint venture blends the agility of a start-up with the stability and expertise of our major shareholders".
