Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre at Bombay now completed

NZ Transport Agency is proud to announce the completion of construction on their new Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC) at Bombay. Designed to improve safety, compliance, and fairness across New Zealand’s freight industry, the centre will soon become a key checkpoint for heavy vehicles travelling along one of the country’s busiest freight corridors.
Commercial vehicle safety centres provide Police with dedicated facilities to carry out thorough inspections of heavy vehicles. At the Bombay CVSC, officers will check critical factors such as vehicle weight, road user charges, certificates of fitness, logbooks, and signs of driver impairment once the site becomes fully operational. These inspections are essential for ensuring that commercial operators meet safety and regulatory standards before continuing their journeys.
One of the biggest advantages of the new centre is its ability to reduce road damage by identifying overweight or non‑compliant vehicles. Overloaded trucks significantly increase wear and tear on highways, so ensuring operators adhere to legal weight limits helps lower maintenance costs for the entire network. The system also promotes fairness by ensuring all freight operators contribute appropriately to road upkeep and operate on an even playing field.
A standout feature of the Bombay CVSC is its suite of advanced screening technologies. The site includes weigh‑in‑motion scales built directly into the roadway, allowing vehicles to be weighed accurately as they drive without stopping. Complementing these are static vehicle recognition cameras and electronic signage installed on State Highway 1, both north and south of the Bombay Interchange. These tools identify passing heavy vehicles in real time, flag potentially non‑compliant operators, and direct them into the safety centre for further inspection.
Now that construction is complete, work is underway to set up the digital systems and operational components required to bring the centre fully online. Once these final steps are finished, Police will begin full inspection operations at the site. The facility is located on Great South Road near the SH1 Bombay Interchange, making it an ideal checkpoint for high‑volume freight travelling through the region.
The Bombay CVSC is part of a wider programme to upgrade existing safety centres and build new ones along major freight routes nationwide. As New Zealand’s freight demand continues to grow, these sites will play an increasingly important role in supporting safer roads, fairer compliance, and more reliable transport networks.
