On September 1, a major advancement in the automotive industry's efforts toward sustainability will take place with the launch of the Tyrewise scheme, as reported by the Motor Trade Association (MTA). This initiative aims to streamline the process for the collection and recycling of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) by providing free collection services from retailers and collection sites, eliminating disposal fees entirely.

Lee Marshall, Chief Executive of the MTA, expressed his enthusiasm for the Tyrewise initiative, which has been in development for the past decade. As a member of the Tyrewise working group, Marshall highlighted the environmental issues associated with improper tyre disposal, noting that nearly four million tyres are discarded in harmful ways each year. “Tyres dumped or buried in landfills have been a blight on the country. The impacts on the environment are obvious and horrendous,” he stated.

Starting next month, automotive businesses will be able to participate in the Tyrewise scheme at no cost, allowing them to responsibly manage old tyres and contribute to environmental conservation efforts. “This removes the last barrier to participation and ensures the automotive industry is playing its part in the circular economy,” Marshall said.

The MTA has been proactive in promoting the Tyrewise scheme among its members, keeping them informed throughout the implementation process. The feedback from the automotive sector has been overwhelmingly positive. “It shows what’s possible when industry and government work together to find a solution,” Marshall concluded. 

The Tyrewise scheme is set to play a crucial role in reducing the environmental impact of tyre waste, underscoring the automotive industry's commitment to sustainability and responsible practices.
