Mid-Canterbury-based Quigley Contracting is a family owned and operated company established in April 2003.

Initially starting out with a 3x3 square baler, tractor and other essential equipment, Andrew Quigley also leased tractors and utes from his parents, David and Jill, whose support has been a big part of the company’s success.

After the first season Andrew decided to employ someone to drive the baler so he could then spend more time running the business and focusing on how to best serve the needs of current and prospective clients.

From there the business grew from one to four balers and in 2006 the company added its first silage harvester to the fleet and has continued to grow in size ever since.

Most of the 14 trucks in the Quigley’s fleet support the company’s agricultural work, but taking on different work required bulk trucks to handle that workload.

Recently the company put a new Iveco S-Way 8x4 to work as a blower unit. The truck is the first of its kind built by the team at Cowan Trailers in Rangiora.

“Yes, it is the first hydraulically driven blower we have done,” says Garry Cowan.

“I had been working on the concept for a while and Rob at Quigley’s was good enough to let me have a go at it and see if it would operate as well as my research said it would.

“A lot of the homework and research had already been completed so it was just a matter of putting it all together. The concept is the same, but we were able to place the blower on the outside of the chassis instead of trying to find a space on the inside of the chassis which is proving very difficult these days.

“It eliminates the need to mount a PTO driven driveshaft to the blower. You also run into ground clearance issues when mounted inside of the chassis. 

“As the Iveco was the first one we had done, Straun Syme from NZ Trucks provided us with all of the technical information that we required to help with the build,” Garry says.

“In the end it has worked out really well and is running as smooth as. It doesn’t have that driveline noise and has an even quieter operation which is a great health and safety bonus. We are now importing all of the blowers and rotary valves ourselves which helps with our planning and have developed our own special control valve blocks for ease of operation.”

The S-Way is powered by a 570 horsepower Cursor 13 engine which produces 2500Nm of torque at 1000 rpm. This is partnered with a 16-speed automated Hi-Tronix 12 TX 2640 TD transmission which has a dash mounted electronic shifter with a column mounted sequential shifter. The engine is also compliant with Euro VI (Step E) emission standards.

Extras in the cab include a multimedia unit which features a 7-inch HD touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Voice Recognition while the exterior has a multi-piece hybrid bumper (plastic & metal) with a foldable step.

The Iveco also comes with a host of safety features like GPS predictive drive, Advanced Emergency Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control and full LED headlights with cornering fog lights. 

The Quigleys fleet now contains three S-Way Ivecos. 

“This 8x4 is now joined by a 6x4 truck and trailer tipper unit and an 8x4 swap body which can operate as a stock unit or dropsider,” says Operations Manager, Rob Raisbeck.

This unit looks slightly different than others in the fleet.

“The changes in design were done in house at Quigleys. The truck unit was painted at Bus and Truck in Ashburton with the finishing touches being made at Mad Signs & Graphics,” Rob says.

The feedback from driver Tyler Greaney has been positive.

“I think the Iveco is really good on the road actually, it’s really comfortable and has plenty of room. I can’t fault it,” says Tyler.

And the last word goes to owner Andrew Quigley.

“Quigleys have and will embrace technology where they can see it will deliver clients better outcomes in terms of reliability and efficiency,” Andrew says.
