Canterbury-based Container Waste Limited has recently added this 2023 International RH 10x4 `head turner’ to its fleet.

The impressive looking unit regularly carts general waste in enclosed capsules and special waste in covered open top bins around the Canterbury district. Its main destination is the Kate Valley Landfill with one or two trips a week up to Kaikoura.

When company owner Darryn Harris started planning for the new International some time ago he reached out to fellow hook truck owner Graham Pascoe, who also runs a 10x4 unit to the Kate Valley Landfill. Although Graham’s truck is a cabover configuration, his help and thoughts were much appreciated.

Palfinger were heavily involved in the setting up of this unit, supplying many layout drawings and axle loading calculations while the wheelbase was being modified to work within the regulations.

Once the wheelbase was decided on, the team from Intertruck Distributors drew it up and the build got underway.

“I would like to thank Intertruck salesman Shaun Jury and the team at Intertruck for helping with this project, believed to be the first 10x4 RH International in the Southern Hemisphere,” Darryn says.

“Intertruck love building trucks to the owners’ needs and no request is too hard. Being locally owned and operated, we like to support New Zealand made wherever possible.”

The RH International 10x4 has been set up to take full advantage of the payloads available within the HPMV system. The hook unit on the truck is a Palfinger T26 6700 capable of carrying the 7.2-metre-long bins and is rated at 26 tonnes.

The front steer axle is a Meritor MFS-143 wide track rated at 6.5 tonnes with a 50-degree wheel cut fitted with 9-inch offset rims. The ECAS (electronic controlled air suspension) second steer axle has a 50-degree wheel cut and is also fitted with 9-inch offset rims.

The rear end has Meritor 46-160 axles fitted with 275/70 x 22.5 tyres on Armoury chrome rims with full cross locks. The fifth axle is a Hendrickson load sensing tag axle with disc brakes.

Towing a Cowan built 5-axle hook lift trailer that features a Hendrickson rear lifting axle and a tyre inflation system, the entire unit runs on a 55-tonne permit which equates to a 30-tonne payload.

Darryn says: “With the hook lift bin system you usually run shorter bins on the truck and longer bins with more payload on the trailer. But with the 10x4 you can run a trailer length bin on the truck as well. With the longer bin on the truck, you can get another 3-4 tonnes payload on the truck enabling a much more evenly spread payload.”

Driver Craig Shaw is really impressed with his new ride which is powered by a 615hp Cummins X-15 producing 2050 lb-ft of torque with an 18-speed manual shift Eaton Roadranger RTLO 20918B transmission.

“The truck is comfortable to ride in and has a great seating position with fantastic mirror visibility for those tight spots. With over 25,000 kms on the clock, it’s really starting to open up now,” Craig says.

When this RH International is coming towards you one feature that really stands out is the deep Ali Arc alloy bumper - so it’s lucky Craig is a polisher. Other features include the stainless-steel visor fitted with LED lights, the new RH style air kit (which has been custom shortened to fit), full premium-plus interior and ISRI seats embossed with the International logo.

Combined with the sharp Intertruck factory paint job, the RH International has had some special treatment from the team at Identity Signs with smooth flowing pinstriping that follow the lines on the truck beautifully and are accompanied by clever scroll work.

Container Waste have been sponsoring the Canterbury Rugby Football Union for five years and this relationship is proudly showcased by the design work on the general waste capsules carried by this unit.

“Paul and Jordan at Identity Signs have done a fantastic job designing and applying these designs to our bins and the CRFU are rapt with the exposure these capsules will create,” Darryn says.

“People have commented to me on numerous occasions about seeing the bins around the district and the cheeky captions that are on some of them.”
