In December, the Light Traffic Index fell 2.0% month on month, while the Heavy Traffic fell 2.5% month on month, this is on top of a fall in November.

Annual growth in light traffic is still lifting but that of heavy traffic has now, according to the report, plateaued. It goes on to say that the Light Traffic Index is the better economic indicator of the two; it suggests annual GDP growth will bounce around the 2% mark into the middle of next year.

Fuel Tax Passes Vote

Auckland councillors have voted to bring in an 11.5 cent-per-litre regional fuel tax to fund the government's contentious transport plan for Auckland City.

Following a heated debate, Councillors voted 13 to 7 in favour of the tax.

Today's debate on the proposed tax began with Mayor Phil Goff saying the consequences would be "inconceivable" if it was not introduced.

He said the government would likely walk away from an agreed programme of transport works if the tax was rejected.

Government to investigate Northland Rail

The potential for upgrading and expanding rail north of Auckland will be investigated, as part of a package targeting Northland's growth, Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Associate Transport Minister Shane Jones have announced.

The business case will be investigated for both passenger and freight tasks according to a statement released by the New Zealand Government.

KiwiRail Claims 5500 Truck Trips off the Road and onto Rail

The first train to travel on the Napier to Wairoa line in six years is the start of a plan aimed at eliminating 5,500 truck road journeys each year, says KiwiRail. However, some remain suspicious of this figure.

The first train to take freight on the reopened track to Eskdale started its trip with a Ratana brass band and official blessing in a ceremony at KiwiRail's Ahuriri depot yesterday morning.

Marc Ebolo has been announced as the new managing director of Isuzu Trucks and Holden New Zealand.

Ebolo will replace Kristian Aquilina, who has been asked to vacate his role at short notice after being appointed as Holden/Isuzu's Australasian marketing director in April.

Progress on Roads, but Major Problems Remain in Gisborne

Contractors have pushed through the major slip on Arakihi Road, inland of Tolaga Bay to find another slip on West Ho Road. Arakihi, West Ho, Kiore and Rangikohua roads remain closed.

Tairawhiti Roads journey manager Helen Harris said this afternoon that the remaining roads are closed due to slips, debris, road scours, silt and sludge, a collapsed retaining wall, culverts jammed with debris, and bridges that still need assessing. Another Truckie Traumatized, Another Motorist at Fault

A truck driver has been left traumatized following a fatal accident involving a foreign national on the Hawke's Bay Expressway. The incident comes at a time when being safe around trucks has been forced into public awareness.
